2017 Porsche 718 Flat-4 Engine

2017 Cayman Driving

The 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman are now in stock at Porsche Barrington, and both come standard with a brand new turbocharged flat four engine in all trim levels. This new engine marks the first time that these models have used four-cylinder engines or turbocharging, so it’s an exciting development. While purists might bemoan the loss of flat-six engines, the new turbo fours offer more power and more efficiency, so it shouldn’t be too much to bear.

The Porsche Flat Four

The new Porsche Flat Four breaks from tradition in a way. All Porsche Cayman and Boxster models—now under the same 718 marque—have used naturally aspirated flat six cylinder engines in the past. Unfortunately tightening emissions regulations mean that automakers, including Porsche, are looking to do more with less. That means make more power with less fuel, but also make more power with less displacement, in smaller spaces.

The solution to the problem of adding more power, and reducing fuel consumption in the Porsche 718 models, ended up including fewer cylinders, and a single turbocharger. This new all-aluminum flat four cylinder is offered in both 2.0L and 2.5L displacements. The 2.0L turbocharged four makes 300 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. The 2.5L turbo four makes 350 hp and 309 lb-ft of torque. Both figures are up from the outgoing six cylinders used in previous model Boxster and Cayman vehicles. What they especially offer is a whole lot more torque, which results in much quicker acceleration

That added muscle results in a 0 to 60 mph time of as little as 4.9 seconds with the 2.0L four-cylinder in the 718 Cayman, and as little a 4.4 seconds with the larger 2.5L four-cylinder in the 718 Cayman S. For reference, the outgoing Cayman made 275 hp and would go from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds. With that much of a difference, nobody should be sad at the loss of those two cylinders.
