The 2016 Porsche Cayman and the 2016 Dodge Viper are both sports cars, but they are very different. You’ll no doubt find plenty of driving thrills, whichever one you choose. If you’re looking for the best performance bang for your buck—and the sports car that you don’t mind driving every day—then you’ll probably end up taking home the Porsche Cayman.
The Porsche Cayman starts at $52,600 MSRP for the base model. The Dodge Viper starts at $87,895 MSRP for the least expensive configuration. It’s worth noting that the Cayman GT4, the most expensive and powerful Porsche Cayman, still costs less than the base Dodge Viper.
The Dodge Viper uses an 8.4L V10 that makes 645 hp. The Viper only offers a six-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. The Viper will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. The EPA rates it at 12 mpg city/21 mpg highway—an extremely poor rating even for a car with 645 hp.
The Cayman simply won’t compete with the Viper in terms of sheer muscle. In fact, the biggest engine offered in the Cayman is less than half the size of that 8.4L V10. Nevertheless, the Porsche Cayman will approach the Viper in terms of performance. The Cayman GT4 with its 385 hp 3.8L flat six cylinder will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in only 4.1 seconds in Car and Driver testing. Plus the Cayman has the advantage of earning admirable fuel economy—the most efficient version rates at 22 mpg city/32 mpg highway.
When it comes to every day comfort and convenience, you’ll find more in the Porsche. It comes with standard equipment like power seats and leather upholstery, both of which are missing from the Viper. Plus, the Cayman is covered with a basic 4-year/50,000-mile warranty, while the Viper is only covered for 3-years/36,000-miles. The Boxster even offers more cargo space than the Viper.
